American Bully vs. American Pitbull Terrier: A Tale of Two Breeds
American Pitbull Terrier
Regarding dog breeds, there is often confusion surrounding the American Bully and the American Pitbull Terrier. Despite their similar appearances and common misconceptions, these breeds are distinct. In this article, we will explore the differences and similarities between these two breeds, explore their history and origin, and discuss their temperament, physical attributes, and suitability as pets.
History and Origins:
The American Pitbull Terrier (APBT) is a breed with a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Developed in England, Ireland, and Scotland, the breed primarily aimed to participate in blood sports such as bullbaiting and dog fighting. When immigrants from these countries arrived in the United States, they brought their APBTs, where the breed evolved and became known as the American Pitbull Terrier. Over time, the breed’s roles shifted to that of working dogs and beloved family pets as dogfighting became illegal.
In contrast, the American Bully is a relatively new breed, created in the late 20th century. The breed’s origin combines various breeds, including the APBT, American Staffordshire Terrier, and other Bulldog-type breeds. Breeders aimed to develop a dog with a more muscular and stocky build while maintaining the amiable temperament of the APBT. The American Bully gained recognition from the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 2013.
Physical Attributes:
Although the American Bully and the American Pitbull Terrier share some physical traits, they have distinct differences in appearance.
The American Pitbull Terrier is a medium-sized dog with a muscular, lean, and athletic build. They have a broad head with a short, flat, and wide muzzle. Their ears are generally cropped, but natural ears are becoming more accepted. The APBT’s coat is short and glossy and comes in various colors. They typically weigh between 30 and 70 pounds, with males being larger than females.
American Bully
On the other hand, the American Bully is a stockier and more muscular breed. They have a broader chest, thicker neck, and a more substantial bone structure than the APBT. The breed is divided into four categories based on size: Pocket, Classic, Standard, and XL. Their head is broad, and their muzzle is shorter and more squared than the APBT. Their coat is short, glossy, and comes in various colors. American Bullies can weigh between 30 and 120 pounds, depending on the size category.
Temperament:
Despite their history and muscular appearance, the American Pitbull Terrier is known for its friendly, affectionate, and loyal temperament. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable. APBTs are great with children, earning them the nickname “nanny dogs.” However, they have a strong prey drive, which can lead to issues with smaller animals if not properly socialized.
The American Bully shares many of the same positive personality traits as the APBT. They are friendly, loyal, and affectionate, with a strong desire to please their owners. American Bullies tend to be more laid-back and less energetic than their APBT counterparts, making them an ideal choice for families or individuals who prefer a more relaxed companion. They are also good with children and can get along with other animals if correctly socialized.
Health and Exercise:
The American Bully and the American Pitbull Terrier have relatively few health issues compared to other breeds. Common health concerns for both breeds include hip dysplasia, allergies, and heart problems.
